The Access Services Department has 15 to 20 students who assist full-time staff in providing patron service at our Circulation Desk. Student Assistants also assist with the shelving and maintenance of the Library's collection under staff supervision. Candidates for these positions must be full time Saint Mary's students.

If you are interested in applying for a position with Access Services, please watch for our postings at the Student Employment Centre.

We also recruit three to four MLIS/LIT students each spring to work on our Research Help desk. Postings are sent to the program directors at Dalhousie and NSCC and passed on to all students who are entering the second year of the program. Completion of the first full year of the program is required for these positions.

Student Assistants are scheduled for day, evening, and weekend hours. The average schedule is 10 hours a week during the fall/winter sessions, and up to 32.5 hours a week in the spring/summer sessions.

Some of the qualities we look for include:

  • A positive and responsible attitude
  • Promptness and dependability
  • A strong aptitude for customer service
  • Ability to perform detailed tasks with and without supervision
  • Ability to perform repetitive, but essential tasks
