The SMU Live Chat service began in 2020 and is provided solely by the Patrick Power Library, whereas the Novanet Live Help service started in 2007 and is comprised of library staff from all 12 libraries in the Novanet consortium. 

The SMU service runs year round on the same hours as the Research Help desk. The Novanet service runs from September to June and typically has longer hours.
